Mary-Alice is a Catholic. Nicolas is a Jew and he is of a higher social standing than Mary-Alice. The pair 'fall' for one another and Mary-Alice becomes pregnant. Horrified Nicolas' dominant mother banishes him to France to never return and live with an uncle. Mary-Alice gives birth to the child, Dorothy. When Dorothy is five years old Mary-Alice marries Harold with whom she remains for the rest of her life. However Mary-Alice's love for Nicolas never fades.
